Indication
Sodium phosphates rectal solution is used as a bowel evacuant to relieve constipation and to cleanse the bowel before rectal or colonoscopic procedures. It works as an osmotic laxative by drawing water into the bowel, softening the stool and stimulating bowel movements.
Ingredients
- Sodium Phosphates
Direction
Adults and children 12 years and over: Administer the contents of one 133 mL enema rectally. Lie on your left side with knees bent, gently insert the nozzle into the rectum, and slowly squeeze the contents. Retain for 2–5 minutes, then evacuate. Use only one enema per 24 hours. Do not use more than one enema at a time.
Side effects
- Abdominal cramps or discomfort
- Rectal irritation
- Electrolyte disturbances with excessive use
- Bloating or nausea
Precautions
- Do not use in patients with congestive heart failure
- ascites
- or unstable angina without medical supervision.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney disease
- inflammatory bowel disease
- or previous bowel surgery.
- Avoid in children under 12 years without medical advice
- use a paediatric
- sized enema for younger children.
- Do not use if there is abdominal pain
- nausea
- or vomiting.
- Excessive use may cause electrolyte imbalance (hyperphosphataemia
- hypocalcaemia).
- Do not use more than once daily.
- Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy.
