Pontalon 500 mg

Indication

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve mild to moderate pain including menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea), dental pain, post-operative pain, headache, and musculoskeletal pain. It also has antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties.

Ingredients

Direction

Adults and children over 14 years: 500 mg three times daily (every 8 hours) with food. Do not use for more than 7 days unless directed by a doctor. Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• or abdominal pain
• Gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding (with prolonged use)
• Headache or dizziness
• Skin rash
• Fluid retention or oedema
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare)
• Kidney impairment with prolonged use (rare)

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to mefenamic acid
• aspirin
• or other NSAIDs.
• Do not use in patients with active peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Use with caution in patients with kidney
• liver
• or heart disease.
• Avoid in the last trimester of pregnancy.
• Do not use in children under 14 years.
• Long
• term use increases the risk of cardiovascular events and gastrointestinal complications.
• May interact with anticoagulants
• other NSAIDs
• diuretics
• and lithium.
• Keep out of reach of children.
