Indication
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride
Direction
Oral use. As directed by physician.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting (very common
- especially at initiation).
- Diarrhoea or loose stools (very common).
- Abdominal pain or discomfort.
- Metallic taste.
- Decreased appetite.
- Lactic acidosis (very rare but potentially fatal).
- Vitamin B12 deficiency with prolonged use.
- Hepatitis (very rare).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Contraindicated in patients with hepatic impairment.
- Withhold before and after iodinated contrast procedures (risk of lactic acidosis).
- Contraindicated in acute or chronic metabolic acidosis
- including diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- monitor renal function regularly.
- Avoid excessive alcohol intake — increases risk of lactic acidosis.
- Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious) — discontinue if symptoms appear (malaise
- muscle pain
- respiratory distress).
- May reduce vitamin B12 absorption with long
- term use
- monitor levels.
- Discontinue if surgery under general anaesthesia is required.
