Indication
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight adults - Used when diet and exercise alone do not control blood glucose - May be used alone or with other antidiabetic agents or insulin
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride 750 mg (extended release)
Direction
Take once daily with the evening meal; swallow whole without crushing or chewing. Dose individualised by a physician, usually starting at 500 mg once daily.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- Abdominal discomfort and loss of appetite
- Metallic taste
- Vitamin B12 deficiency with long
- term use
- Rarely lactic acidosis
Precautions
- Contraindicated in moderate to severe renal impairment
- Stop before procedures using iodinated contrast media
- Avoid in conditions predisposing to lactic acidosis (dehydration
- severe infection
- hypoxia)
- Limit alcohol intake
