Indication

- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight patients - Used when diet and exercise alone do not control blood sugar - May be used alone or with other antidiabetic agents or insulin

Ingredients

• Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg

Direction

Take by mouth with or after meals as prescribed; the dose is titrated gradually by the physician to minimize gastrointestinal effects.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting and diarrhea
• Abdominal discomfort
• Metallic taste
• Loss of appetite
• Rarely
• lactic acidosis

Precautions

• Risk of lactic acidosis
• avoid in significant renal impairment
• Temporarily stop before surgery or iodinated contrast imaging
• Use with caution with alcohol and conditions causing dehydration
• Monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 periodically
