Indication
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight patients - Used when diet and exercise alone do not control blood sugar - May be used alone or with other antidiabetic agents or insulin
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg
Direction
Take by mouth with or after meals as prescribed; the dose is titrated gradually by the physician to minimize gastrointestinal effects.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting and diarrhea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Metallic taste
- Loss of appetite
- Rarely
- lactic acidosis
Precautions
- Risk of lactic acidosis
- avoid in significant renal impairment
- Temporarily stop before surgery or iodinated contrast imaging
- Use with caution with alcohol and conditions causing dehydration
- Monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 periodically
