Indication
- Pricking the skin (usually fingertip) to obtain a small blood sample - Used with a lancing device for blood glucose monitoring - Capillary blood sampling for point-of-care testing

Load the sterile lancet into a lancing device, clean the skin, prick the side of a fingertip, then discard the used lancet safely after a single use.
Side effects
- Minor pain at the puncture site
- Slight bruising or bleeding
- Risk of infection if reused or not used aseptically

- never share lancets to avoid bloodborne infections
- Do not use if sterile packaging is damaged
- Dispose of used lancets in a sharps container
