Indication

Treatment of epilepsy, excluding petit mal seizures.

Ingredients

• Phenobarbital (Phénobarbital) 100 mg

Direction

Adults: 2–3 mg/kg/day orally. Children: <20 kg: 5 mg/kg/day; 20–30 kg: 3–4 mg/kg/day; >30 kg: 2–3 mg/kg/day. As directed by physician.

Side effects

• Drowsiness
• Cognitive impairment
• Ataxia
• Paradoxical excitement in children
• Dependence with prolonged use

Precautions

• Controlled substance — prescription required
• Risk of dependence and withdrawal seizures on abrupt discontinuation
• Do not stop treatment suddenly
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic or respiratory impairment
• Avoid alcohol
• May impair ability to drive
