Indication
Antibiotic. For paediatric use to treat susceptible bacterial infections, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections, otitis media, urinary tract infections and uncomplicated gonorrhoea, as prescribed by a doctor.
Ingredients
- Cefixime USP (as trihydrate) equivalent to anhydrous Cefixime 100 mg per 5 ml after reconstitution
Direction
Directions for reconstitution: Shake the bottle to loosen the powder. Slowly add cooled boiled water up to the ring on the bottle and shake well. Adjust the volume up to the ring by adding more water if necessary. After reconstitution, keep the suspension in the refrigerator when not in use. Shake well before each use. Paediatric dosing by body weight (daily dose): 10 kg → 4 ml; 12.5 kg → 5 ml; 15 kg → 6 ml; 17.5 kg → 7 ml; 20 kg → 8 ml; 22.5 kg → 9 ml; 25 kg → 10 ml; 27.5 kg → 11 ml; 30 kg → 12 ml; 37.5 kg → 15 ml; > 37.5 kg and patients 12 years and older → 20 ml. Patients can take the medicine in a single daily dose or divided into 2 doses, or as directed by the physician.
Side effects
- May cause diarrhoea
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- headache
- or skin rash.
- Rarely may cause serious allergic reactions
- severe diarrhoea (including Clostridioides difficile
- associated diarrhoea) or transient changes in liver/kidney parameters. Stop use and consult a doctor immediately for severe rash
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of the face/lips/tongue
- severe abdominal pain or persistent severe diarrhoea.
Precautions
- Prescription
- only antibiotic — use only under medical supervision.
- Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefixime
- other cephalosporins or any component of the formulation.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy or severe renal impairment.
- Complete the full prescribed course of treatment even if symptoms improve
- to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
- After reconstitution
- keep refrigerated when not in use and discard any unused suspension after the period stated by the prescriber or pharmacist.
