Indication
Emergency contraceptive pill. For prevention of pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. Effective when taken as soon as possible within 5 days (120 hours) of unprotected intercourse.
Ingredients
- Ulipristal Acetate INN 30 mg
Direction
Take one tablet by mouth as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse — preferably within 24 hours, but effective up to 120 hours (5 days). May be taken with or without food. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the tablet, take another tablet.
Side effects
- Common: headache
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- menstrual cycle disturbances (early or late period
- spotting)
- dizziness
- fatigue.
- Less common: vomiting
- mood changes
- breast tenderness
- dysmenorrhoea.
- Seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain (may indicate ectopic pregnancy) or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Precautions
- For emergency contraception only — not for routine contraception.
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- Not recommended during established pregnancy (does not terminate an existing pregnancy).
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use
- especially if you have severe asthma
- severe liver disease
- or are taking medications that may interact with ulipristal (e.g. CYP3A4 inducers).
- Breastfeeding should be paused for 1 week after taking ulipristal acetate.
- If a menstrual period is more than 7 days late
- perform a pregnancy test.
- If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the tablet
- take another dose.
