Indication
Reduces gastric acid secretion. Treatment of duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and prevention of stress-related upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Also used in management of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Ingredients
- Cimetidine
Direction
Adults: usually 400 mg twice a day (with breakfast and at bedtime), or 800 mg once a day at bedtime, for at least 4 to 6 weeks for active ulcer treatment. Maintenance dose 400 mg at bedtime. Dosage should be adjusted by the prescribing physician based on indication and renal function.
Side effects
- May include headache
- dizziness
- diarrhoea
- fatigue
- skin rash
- and gynaecomastia (with prolonged high
- dose use). Rare side effects include confusion (especially in elderly or renal impairment) and reversible liver enzyme changes. Stop use and consult a doctor or pharmacist immediately if you experience any unusual or severe reaction.
Precautions
- Prescription
- only medicine. Use under medical supervision. Inform your doctor of any kidney or liver impairment
- pregnancy
- or breastfeeding. Cimetidine can interact with many drugs (warfarin
- phenytoin
- theophylline
- beta
- blockers
- etc.) — review concurrent medications with a pharmacist. Long
- term use should be reviewed periodically. Symptomatic response does not preclude the presence of gastric malignancy.
