Cimetidine 400 Tifami 400 mg

Indication

For the treatment of duodenal and benign gastric ulceration, peptic oesophagitis, and prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcer. Also used in the management of pathological hypersecretion (such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).

Direction

Adults: in active duodenal ulcer the usual dose is 400 mg at breakfast and 400 mg at bedtime (0.8 g/day) or 200 mg three times a day with meals and 400 mg at bedtime (1.0 g/day) or as directed by physician. Treatment should be continued for at least 4 weeks even if symptomatic relief has been achieved. In benign gastric ulceration: same regimen for at least 6 weeks. In Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 200 mg three times a day with meals and 400 mg at bedtime, or as directed by physician.

Side effects

• May include headache
• dizziness
• diarrhoea
• fatigue
• skin rash
• and gynaecomastia (with prolonged high
• dose use). Rare side effects include confusion (especially in elderly or renal impairment) and reversible liver enzyme changes. Stop use and consult a doctor or pharmacist immediately if you experience any unusual or severe reaction.

Precautions

• Prescription
• only medicine. In patients with impaired renal function
• dosage should be reduced according to creatinine clearance. The possibility of malignancy in gastric ulcer should be excluded before starting treatment. Should not be administered during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Inform your doctor of any liver impairment or concurrent medications (cimetidine has many drug interactions).
