Indication
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone do not give adequate blood glucose control.
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg
Direction
For oral use. Refer to package insert for dosage and other information, or take as directed by the physician. Usually taken with or after meals to reduce stomach upset.
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal effects: nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain and loss of appetite
- especially at the start of treatment
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Vitamin B12 deficiency with long
- term use
- Rarely
- lactic acidosis (a serious metabolic complication)
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use
- stop if irritation or allergy occurs
Precautions
- Not for patients with significant kidney or liver impairment
- or conditions causing tissue hypoxia
- due to the risk of lactic acidosis
- Stop temporarily before surgery or procedures using iodinated contrast media
- Limit alcohol
- which increases the risk of lactic acidosis
- Tell your doctor if pregnant
- planning pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use
- stop if irritation or allergy occurs
