Indication

Indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Sitagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor and metformin a biguanide; the combination addresses blood sugar through complementary mechanisms.

Ingredients

• Sitagliptin 50 mg
• Metformin HCl 500 mg

Direction

For oral use, generally taken twice daily with meals. The recommended starting dose is usually one tablet twice daily, with dosing individualised by the physician. Maximum 100 mg sitagliptin and 2000 mg metformin per day.

Side effects

• Nausea
• diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort
• Hypoglycaemia
• especially when combined with other antidiabetics
• Headache
• Rarely
• pancreatitis or lactic acidosis

Precautions

• Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs.
• Renal function should be assessed before and during treatment
• contraindicated in severe renal impairment.
