Indication
For the treatment of type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone do not give adequate blood glucose control.
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride 500 mg
Direction
Taken with or after meals to reduce stomach upset. The dose is started low and increased gradually as directed by the doctor.
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea
- diarrhoea
- abdominal discomfort and metallic taste
- Reduced vitamin B12 absorption with long
- term use
- Very rarely lactic acidosis (a serious metabolic complication)
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs
Precautions
- Avoid or use with caution in kidney impairment because of the risk of lactic acidosis
- Should be temporarily stopped before surgery or before receiving iodinated contrast media
- Limit alcohol during treatment
