Indication
A fixed-dose combination of glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) and metformin (a biguanide) used to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise and a single agent do not give adequate control.
Ingredients
- Glimepiride USP 2 mg
- Metformin hydrochloride USP 500 mg
Direction
Take by mouth with meals as directed by the physician, usually once or twice daily. The dose is individualised to blood glucose response; take with food to reduce stomach upset and the risk of low blood sugar. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Side effects
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
- shakiness
- sweating
- hunger
- dizziness
- Nausea
- diarrhoea
- abdominal discomfort or metallic taste
- Weight change
- Rarely
- lactic acidosis (with metformin) or vitamin B12 deficiency on long
- term use
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs
Precautions
- Carry a source of sugar in case of hypoglycaemia
- do not skip meals
- Avoid excessive alcohol
- which increases the risk of low blood sugar and lactic acidosis
- Not for use in severe kidney or liver impairment
- or in conditions causing low oxygen
- tell your doctor before contrast X
- ray procedures
- Monitor blood glucose and kidney function regularly during treatment
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use and stop if irritation or allergy occurs
