Indication
An antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent used to treat amoebiasis (intestinal, asymptomatic and hepatic), trichomoniasis and giardiasis, as well as certain anaerobic bacterial infections (Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides fragilis).
Ingredients
- Metronidazole
Direction
Amoebic dysentery: children 30-50 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses; adults 1.5 g/day divided into 3 doses. Giardiasis: children 15 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses; adults 750 mg/day divided into 3 doses. Trichomoniasis: adults 2 g as a single dose. Take as directed by a doctor or pharmacist.
Side effects
- May cause nausea
- metallic taste
- loss of appetite
- abdominal pain
- headache or dark
- coloured urine. Consult a doctor or pharmacist if any side effects occur.
Precautions
- Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours afterwards
- as this may cause a severe reaction. Use with caution in patients with liver impairment or blood disorders. Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
