Indication
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris and acute myocardial infarction. Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker that slows the heart rate and reduces the workload of the heart.
Ingredients
- Atenolol 50 mg
Direction
Take by mouth as directed by a doctor, usually once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water at the same time each day. The dose is individual and must be set by a doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as this may worsen angina or blood pressure — the dose should be reduced gradually under medical supervision. Please refer to the insert paper and do not exceed the stated doses.
Side effects
- Tiredness
- fatigue and weakness
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- Cold hands and feet
- Dizziness or light
- headedness
- particularly when standing up
- Nausea and diarrhoea
- Sleep disturbances or unusual dreams
- Rarely wheezing or shortness of breath
- especially in people with asthma
- If any side effect is severe or persists
- consult a doctor or pharmacist
Precautions
- On medical prescription only. Do not use without medical supervision
- Do not use if you are allergic to atenolol or other beta
- blockers
- Do not use in severe bradycardia
- heart block
- uncontrolled heart failure or cardiogenic shock
- Use with caution if you have asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- as beta
- blockers may trigger bronchospasm
- Use with caution in diabetes — atenolol can mask the warning signs of low blood sugar such as a fast heartbeat
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems
- thyroid disease or peripheral circulatory disorders
- Never stop treatment abruptly
- the dose must be tapered under medical supervision
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant
- planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Keep out of reach of children. Read the insert paper carefully before use
