Indication
Treatment and prevention of iron-deficiency anaemia. Ferrous fumarate supplies iron, which the body needs to make haemoglobin and carry oxygen in the blood. It is used when dietary iron is insufficient, for example during pregnancy, heavy menstrual bleeding, or after blood loss.
Ingredients
- Ferrous fumarate 200 mg
Direction
Take by mouth as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Swallow the sugar-coated tablet whole with water, preferably between meals for better absorption; if it upsets the stomach it may be taken with food. See the package leaflet for full dosing instructions. Do not take within two hours of antacids, tea or milk, as these reduce iron absorption.
Side effects
- Stomach upset
- nausea or abdominal discomfort
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Black or dark
- coloured stools
- which is harmless and expected
- Metallic taste
- If any side effect persists or worsens
- consult a doctor or pharmacist
Precautions
- Do not use in people with iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis
- or in anaemia not caused by iron deficiency
- Keep strictly out of the reach of children
- accidental overdose of iron
- containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in young children
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose
- Separate from antacids
- tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics
- tea and milk by at least two hours
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant
- breastfeeding
- or taking other medicines
