Indication
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic for bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms: lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, pelvic inflammatory disease, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, septicaemia and surgical prophylaxis.
Ingredients
- Ceftriaxone 1 g (as ceftriaxone sodium)
Direction
For intramuscular or intravenous injection only, administered by a healthcare professional. Usual adult dose 1-2 g once daily; up to 4 g daily in severe infections. Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or lidocaine (IM route only) immediately before use. Dosage and duration as directed by the physician.
Side effects
- May cause pain or induration at the injection site
- diarrhoea
- nausea
- rash
- eosinophilia and raised liver enzymes. Rarely: hypersensitivity or anaphylactic reactions
- biliary pseudolithiasis (gallbladder sludge)
- haemolytic anaemia and Clostridioides difficile
- associated colitis. If you experience any adverse effects
- consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or other cephalosporins
- and in premature or hyperbilirubinaemic neonates. Must NOT be mixed or given simultaneously with calcium
- containing intravenous solutions (including Ringer's lactate)
- especially in neonates. Use with caution in penicillin allergy
- severe hepatic or renal impairment
- and in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Prescription drug — use only under medical supervision. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
