Indication
Treatment and prevention of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency and scurvy when oral administration is not possible or not adequate. Also used as a supportive supplement in states of increased vitamin C requirement such as convalescence, prolonged infection and poor wound healing.
Ingredients
- Ascorbic Acid 500 mg
Direction
For intramuscular or intravenous injection, administered by a healthcare professional. Usual adult dose: 100-500 mg daily; higher doses may be used in scurvy as directed. Intravenous injection should be given slowly. Dosage and duration as directed by the physician.
Side effects
- Generally well tolerated. May cause pain or stinging at the injection site
- flushing
- headache
- dizziness
- nausea and fatigue. Rapid intravenous injection may cause transient dizziness or faintness. High doses may cause diarrhoea and increase the risk of kidney (oxalate) stones. If you experience any adverse effects
- consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid. Use with caution in patients with a history of kidney stones (oxalate nephrolithiasis)

- haemochromatosis or other iron
- overload states

- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
- where high doses may cause haemolysis. High doses may interfere with certain laboratory tests
- including blood and urine glucose measurements. Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only when clearly needed. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
