Indication
Relief of constipation. Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the wall of the large intestine to promote a bowel movement. Given rectally it usually works within about 30 minutes, which is faster than the oral tablet.
Ingredients
- Bisacodyl 5 mg
Direction
For rectal route only. Not to be taken orally. Children below 10 years of age: one suppository of 5 mg. Insert the suppository well into the rectum. Bisacodyl suppository is usually effective within 30 minutes after insertion. Please refer to the enclosed leaflet for more detail.
Side effects
- Abdominal cramps or abdominal discomfort
- Local irritation or burning sensation in the rectum
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Prolonged or excessive use may cause fluid and electrolyte loss and laxative dependence
- If symptoms persist or worsen
- consult a doctor or pharmacist
Precautions
- For rectal route only
- not to be taken orally
- Do not use in intestinal obstruction
- acute abdominal conditions such as appendicitis
- acute inflammatory bowel disease
- or severe dehydration
- Do not use if there is rectal bleeding
- anal fissure
- inflammation or recent rectal surgery
- Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days unless directed by a doctor
- as this may lead to laxative dependence
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant
- breastfeeding
- or taking other medicines
