Y.S.P. Bisacodyl 5 mg

Indication

Relief of constipation. Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the wall of the large intestine to promote a bowel movement. Given rectally it usually works within about 30 minutes, which is faster than the oral tablet.

• Bisacodyl 5 mg

Direction

For rectal route only. Not to be taken orally. Children below 10 years of age: one suppository of 5 mg. Insert the suppository well into the rectum. Bisacodyl suppository is usually effective within 30 minutes after insertion. Please refer to the enclosed leaflet for more detail.

Side effects

• Abdominal cramps or abdominal discomfort
• Local irritation or burning sensation in the rectum
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Prolonged or excessive use may cause fluid and electrolyte loss and laxative dependence
• If symptoms persist or worsen
• consult a doctor or pharmacist

Precautions

• For rectal route only
• not to be taken orally
• Do not use in intestinal obstruction
• acute abdominal conditions such as appendicitis
• acute inflammatory bowel disease
• or severe dehydration
• Do not use if there is rectal bleeding
• anal fissure
• inflammation or recent rectal surgery
• Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days unless directed by a doctor
• as this may lead to laxative dependence
• Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant
• breastfeeding
• or taking other medicines
