Lopid (Gemfibrozil) 300 mg

Indication

Lopid (Gemfibrozil) is used as an adjunct to diet in adults with severe hypertriglyceridaemia, and to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in patients with type IIb hyperlipidaemia who have not responded adequately to diet, weight reduction, and other pharmacological treatments.

Ingredients

• Gemfibrozil 300 mg

Direction

Adults: 600 mg twice daily (1200 mg/day total), taken 30 minutes before morning and evening meals.

Side effects

• Dyspepsia
• abdominal pain
• diarrhoea
• nausea
• Elevated liver transaminases
• Myalgia
• myopathy
• Rash
• eczema
• Headache
• dizziness
• Rare: rhabdomyolysis
• cholelithiasis

Precautions

• Contraindicated in hepatic or severe renal impairment
• gallbladder disease
• and hypersensitivity to gemfibrozil.
• Contraindicated in combination with repaglinide.
• Increased risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
• especially in combination with statins
• concomitant statin use is generally contraindicated.
• Monitor liver function tests and blood counts periodically.
• Interactions: potentiates warfarin anticoagulation
• adjust warfarin dose and monitor INR.
• Not recommended in children.
