Indication

Berodual is a combination bronchodilator containing a beta-2 agonist (Fenoterol) and an anticholinergic (Ipratropium) used for the prevention and treatment of airway obstruction in obstructive pulmonary diseases such as asthma and COPD.

Ingredients

• Fenoterol hydrobromide 50 micrograms per dose
• Ipratropium bromide 20 micrograms per dose

Direction

Adults and children over 12 years: For inhalation solution via nebuliser: 1–2.5 mL as needed, up to 4 times daily. For MDI: 1–2 puffs up to 4 times daily. Children 6–12 years: nebuliser solution under medical supervision. Follow physician instructions for exact dose and frequency.

Side effects

• Common: tremor
• headache
• dry mouth
• tachycardia
• palpitations.
• Common: cough
• local irritation.
• Uncommon: nausea
• vomiting
• dizziness.
• Uncommon: urinary retention
• constipation.
• Rare: paradoxical bronchospasm.
• Rare: hypokalaemia with high doses.
• Rare: eye complications if spray enters eyes (acute glaucoma).

Precautions

• Contraindicated in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and tachyarrhythmia.
• Use with caution in cardiovascular disease
• hypertension
• hyperthyroidism
• and diabetes.
• Use with caution in patients with glaucoma — avoid spraying into eyes.
• Use with caution in urinary retention and prostatic hyperplasia.
• Excessive use may cause paradoxical bronchospasm — stop and seek medical advice.
• Caution with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.
