Nasonex 50 micrograms/dose

Indication

Nasonex contains Mometasone furoate, an intranasal corticosteroid used for the prophylaxis and treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children aged 2 years and over, and for nasal polyps in adults.

Ingredients

• Mometasone furoate 50 micrograms per spray

Direction

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: 2 sprays (100 mcg) into each nostril once daily. For prevention of seasonal allergic rhinitis, begin 2–4 weeks before the expected allergy season. Children aged 2–11 years: 1 spray per nostril once daily. Shake gently before use and clear nasal passages first.

Side effects

• Common: headache
• nasal bleeding (epistaxis)
• nasal irritation
• nasal burning.
• Common: upper respiratory tract infection
• sore throat.
• Uncommon: nasal ulceration.
• Rare: nasal septal perforation.
• Rare: raised intraocular pressure
• cataracts
• glaucoma.

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with untreated nasal infections or recent nasal surgery.
• Long
• term use: monitor for nasal mucosal changes.
• Caution in patients taking ritonavir or ketoconazole (increased systemic steroid exposure).
• Growth retardation possible in children — use the lowest effective dose.
• May unmask adrenal insufficiency when switching from systemic corticosteroids.
