METRO-MS 500 500mg

Indication

METRO-MS 500 contains metronidazole, a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent. It is indicated for treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections, protozoal infections (giardiasis, amoebiasis, trichomoniasis), Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination), and prevention of post-operative anaerobic infections.

Ingredients

• Metronidazole 500 mg

Direction

Adults: Dosage depends on indication. For bacterial infections: 400–500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. For trichomoniasis: 2 g as a single dose, or 500 mg twice daily for 7 days. For amoebiasis: 500–750 mg 3 times daily for 5–10 days. Take with or after food to reduce GI upset.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• and metallic taste.
• Abdominal cramps and diarrhoea.
• Headache and dizziness.
• Dark/discoloured urine.
• Peripheral neuropathy with prolonged use.
• Allergic reactions (rare).

Precautions

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after completion (disulfiram
• like reaction).
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
• May interact with warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect).
• Use with caution in patients with neurological disorders (peripheral neuropathy risk).
• Not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy.
• Complete the full course of treatment.
