DOXYCAP Doxycycline Capsule U.S.P. 100 mg

Indication

DOXYCAP contains doxycycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. It is used for treatment of respiratory tract infections (including atypical pneumonia), chlamydia, Lyme disease, malaria prophylaxis and treatment, rickettsia, acne vulgaris, and sexually transmitted infections.

Ingredients

• Doxycycline hyclate 100 mg

Direction

Adults: 100 mg twice daily on the first day, then 100 mg once daily (or 50 mg twice daily) thereafter. Take with a full glass of water and remain upright for 30 minutes after administration. May be taken with food to reduce GI upset.

Side effects

• Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort.
• Oesophageal irritation or ulceration.
• Photosensitivity.
• Skin rash.
• Dental discolouration in children.
• Candidiasis (oral or vaginal).
• Elevated liver enzymes (with prolonged use).

Precautions

• Not recommended in children under 8 years (permanent tooth discolouration and impaired bone growth).
• Contraindicated in pregnancy (foetal tooth discolouration and skeletal effects).
• Avoid simultaneous administration with antacids
• dairy products
• iron supplements
• or bismuth (reduced absorption).
• May cause photosensitivity
• avoid excessive sun exposure.
• Oesophageal ulceration risk — take with plenty of water and do not lie down for 30 minutes.
• May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
