Bactrim 400 mg Sulfaméthoxazole / 80 mg Triméthoprime

Indication

Bactrim is a combined antibiotic (co-trimoxazole) used for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (including Pneumocystis pneumonia prophylaxis and treatment), gastrointestinal infections, toxoplasmosis, and various other bacterial infections.

Ingredients

• Sulfamethoxazole 400 mg
• Trimethoprim 80 mg

Direction

Adults: 2 tablets (800 mg sulfamethoxazole + 160 mg trimethoprim) twice daily for 5–14 days. Children: dose based on body weight (approximately 20 mg sulfamethoxazole + 4 mg trimethoprim per kg per dose, twice daily). Take with food and a full glass of water.

Side effects

• Nausea and vomiting.
• Skin rash (including severe reactions).
• Haematological effects (anaemia
• leucopenia) with prolonged use.
• Hyperkalaemia.
• Photosensitivity.
• Increased creatinine.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in sulphonamide or trimethoprim hypersensitivity.
• Contraindicated in severe hepatic or renal failure.
• Risk of serious skin reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome
• TEN) — discontinue at first sign of rash.
• Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
• Monitor blood counts with prolonged use.
• Not recommended in first trimester or near
• term pregnancy.
• May interact with warfarin
• methotrexate
• and phenytoin.
