VIREST 400 Aciclovir B.P. 400 mg

Indication

VIREST 400 contains aciclovir (acyclovir), an antiviral agent used for treatment and suppression of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections (genital herpes, cold sores, herpes labialis, herpetic whitlow), herpes zoster (shingles), and varicella (chickenpox) in immunocompromised patients.

Ingredients

• Aciclovir 400 mg

Direction

Adults: For treatment of genital herpes: 200–400 mg 5 times daily for 5 days. For suppression: 400 mg twice daily. For herpes zoster: 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Start treatment as early as possible after symptom onset.

Side effects

• Nausea and headache.
• Gastrointestinal discomfort.
• Dizziness.
• Fatigue.
• Elevated creatinine (with high doses or in renal impairment).
• Neurological effects (confusion
• hallucinations) — rare

Precautions

• Maintain adequate hydration during treatment (adequate fluid intake).
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose reduction required).
• Not a cure — does not eliminate the herpes virus or prevent transmission to others.
