Tetracycline Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Ointment U.S.P. 1% 1% (3.5 g tube)

Indication

Ophthalmic antibiotic ointment used for the treatment of superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and trachoma. Also used as prophylaxis against neonatal ophthalmia.

Ingredients

• Tetracycline Hydrochloride 10 mg/g (1% w/w)

Direction

Apply a small amount (approximately 1 cm ribbon) of ointment to the inner lower eyelid of the affected eye(s) 2–4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. For neonatal prophylaxis, apply once to each eye shortly after birth.

Side effects

• Temporary blurred vision after application.
• Local irritation

Precautions

• Not for injection or oral use.
• Avoid contact of tube tip with eye to prevent contamination.
• Discard remaining ointment after completing treatment course.
• Tetracyclines are contraindicated in children under 8 years for systemic use
• however
• ophthalmic use is generally acceptable under medical supervision.
• Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.
• Keep out of reach of children.
