Polydexa Neomycin (6500 IU/mL), Polymyxin B (10,000 IU/mL), Dexamethasone (1 mg/mL)

Indication

Combined antibiotic and corticosteroid ear drops used for the treatment of bacterial otitis externa and other inflammatory ear conditions caused by susceptible organisms. Provides antibacterial coverage against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria along with anti-inflammatory effect.

Ingredients

• Neomycin sulfate 6500 IU per mL
• Polymyxin B sulfate 10000 IU per mL
• Dexamethasone 1 mg per mL

Direction

Adults and children over 3 years: Instil 3–4 drops into the affected ear 3–4 times daily for 5–10 days, or as directed by a physician.

Side effects

• Local irritation
• burning
• or stinging.
• Contact dermatitis (due to neomycin — with prolonged use).
• Rare: systemic absorption with excessive use in large ear cavities.

Precautions

• Contraindicated if eardrum is perforated.
• Not for ophthalmic use.
• Prolonged use may lead to fungal superinfection or development of resistant organisms.
• Neomycin may cause contact sensitisation with prolonged use.
• Keep out of reach of children.
