Proactin Cyproheptadine hydrochloride 2 mg/5 mL

Indication

The Proactin package lists loss of appetite and describes the syrup as an appetite stimulant. Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine; use for appetite stimulation should be directed by a licensed clinician.

Ingredients

• Cyproheptadine hydrochloride 2 mg per 5 mL

Direction

For oral use. The package lists: children 2–6 years, 5 mL 2 or 3 times daily; children 7–14 years, 10 mL 2 or 3 times daily; adolescents and adults, 10 mL 3 times daily or as directed by a physician. Confirm that the medicine and dose are appropriate with a clinician or pharmacist; shake well before use.

Side effects

• Drowsiness or sedation

• dry mouth
• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• constipation
• or blurred vision may occur.
• Children may sometimes become unusually excited or restless. Serious allergic reactions
• fainting
• severe confusion
• or difficulty urinating require urgent medical advice.

Precautions

• Do not use in newborn or premature infants. Safety and effectiveness below 2 years have not been established in the referenced official label. Avoid use during breastfeeding unless a clinician specifically directs otherwise.
• Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines or in people with allergy to cyproheptadine. Ask a clinician before use with glaucoma
• urinary or stomach outlet obstruction
• prostate enlargement
• or other medicines. It may cause sleepiness
• avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines and do not drive if affected. Keep out of reach of children
• overdose can be dangerous
