Indication
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents or insulin, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone do not achieve adequate glycaemic control.
Ingredients
- Metformin hydrochloride 1000 mg
Direction
Adults: 1000 mg twice daily with or after meals. May start with 500 mg two to three times daily and titrate upward. Maximum dose 3000 mg/day. Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole. Take with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- and diarrhoea (usually transient
- reduced by taking with food).
- Metallic taste.
- Lactic acidosis (rare but serious).
- Vitamin B12 deficiency (long
- term use).
- Anorexia.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in eGFR <30 mL/min (renal failure) — risk of lactic acidosis.
- Withhold before and 48 hours after iodinated contrast media administration.
- Contraindicated in hepatic impairment and excessive alcohol intake.
- Monitor renal function regularly.
- Risk of vitamin B12 deficiency with long
- term use — monitor levels periodically.
- Hold on day of surgery and restart only when adequate oral intake and renal function confirmed.
- Keep out of reach of children.
