Indication
Prescription antibacterial combination (co-trimoxazole) used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as urinary tract infections, certain respiratory tract infections (e.g. acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis), ear infections, certain gastrointestinal infections, and for the treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.
Ingredients
- Sulfamethoxazole 800 mg
- Trimethoprim 160 mg
Direction
Oral route. Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor and respect the prescribed doses. The usual adult dose is 1 tablet twice daily (every 12 hours), swallowed with a glass of water, preferably with food; drink plenty of fluids during treatment. The tablet is scored and can be divided. Complete the full course.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite or diarrhoea
- Skin rash or itching
- rarely severe skin reactions (blistering
- peeling) — stop and seek urgent care
- Blood disorders (unusual bruising
- sore throat
- fever) — report to your doctor
- Raised blood potassium
- especially in the elderly or with kidney problems
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist if any side effect is troublesome or persists
- and stop use if an allergic reaction occurs.
Precautions
- Prescription
- only medicine (Liste I)
- respect the prescribed doses.
- Do not use during pregnancy unless there is no therapeutic alternative (Bactrim + pregnancy = danger).
- Do not use if allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim
- or in newborns under 6 weeks.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease
- G6PD deficiency
- folate deficiency
- or blood disorders.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Read the leaflet before use.
