Indication

Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). Also approved for reducing the risk of stroke and for diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes.

Side effects

• Hypotension (especially first dose).
• Dizziness.
• Hyperkalaemia.
• Elevated serum creatinine.
• Fatigue.
• Cough (less common than with ACE inhibitors).
• Angioedema (rare).
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare).

Precautions

• Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to losartan
• pregnancy (2nd and 3rd trimester)
• and severe hepatic impairment.
• Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
• Monitor renal function
• blood pressure
• and electrolytes at initiation.
• Risk of hyperkalaemia
• especially with potassium supplements or potassium
• sparing diuretics.
• Discontinue immediately if pregnancy is detected.
• Use with caution in bilateral renal artery stenosis.
• Keep out of reach of children.
