Indication

An antiviral medicine used for the treatment and suppression of herpes simplex infections (cold sores, genital herpes) and herpes zoster (shingles). Also used in varicella (chickenpox).

Ingredients

Acyclovir 400 mg

Direction

Adults: For herpes simplex treatment — 400 mg 3 times daily for 5 days. For suppression — 400 mg twice daily. For herpes zoster — 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Take with or without food; maintain adequate hydration.

Side effects

Common: nausea
vomiting
diarrhoea
headache.
Fatigue
dizziness.
Rarely: renal impairment
neurological reactions (confusion
agitation).

Precautions

Maintain good hydration to reduce risk of kidney
related side effects.
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required).
Neurological side effects reported at high doses or in renal impairment.
Consult a doctor during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Keep out of reach of children.
