Indication

Acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine) is a mucolytic agent used to reduce the viscosity of mucus secretions in respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and other conditions associated with thick or excessive mucus production.

Ingredients

• Acetylcysteine 200 mg

Direction

Adults: 200 mg (1 sachet or tablet) 2–3 times daily. Children 6–14 years: 200 mg twice daily. Children 2–5 years: 100 mg 2–3 times daily. Take dissolved in water or as directed. Follow physician's instructions for specific formulations.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• or diarrhoea.
• Stomatitis (oral irritation) with effervescent formulations.
• Skin rash or urticaria (allergic reaction
• rare).
• Bronchospasm in asthmatic patients (rare).

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease.
• Use with caution in patients with bronchial asthma as mucus liquefaction can worsen bronchospasm in some cases.
• Avoid concomitant use with antitussives (cough suppressants) without medical advice.
• Consult a physician if symptoms persist or worsen.
