Zyloric Allopurinol 200mg

Indication

Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower serum uric acid levels. It is used in the long-term management and prevention of gout, hyperuricaemia associated with chemotherapy, and uric acid kidney stones.

Ingredients

• Allopurinol 200 mg

Direction

Adults: Initially 100 mg once daily after a meal; increase gradually to 200–300 mg daily for mild conditions, or up to 400–600 mg daily for severe conditions. Maintain adequate fluid intake (2–3 litres of water per day). Dose should be adjusted in renal impairment.

Side effects

• Skin rash (may be severe in some cases).
• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• or abdominal discomfort.
• Acute gout attack (may be precipitated early in therapy).
• Drowsiness or headache (rare).
• Serious hypersensitivity reactions including Stevens
• Johnson syndrome (rare but potentially life
• threatening).

Precautions

• Do not initiate allopurinol during an acute gout attack.
• Do not use if allergic to allopurinol.
• Discontinue immediately if skin rash occurs — can indicate serious hypersensitivity reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome).
• Dose reduction required in renal and hepatic impairment.
• Interactions with azathioprine
• mercaptopurine
• warfarin
• and some diuretics
