Indication
Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) used to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and to raise HDL cholesterol. It is used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease events in patients with risk factors.
Ingredients
- Atorvastatin calcium 10 mg
Direction
Adults: 10–80 mg once daily at any time of day, with or without food. The starting dose is usually 10 mg once daily. Dose adjustments are made based on lipid response and tolerability.
Side effects
- Muscle pain or myalgia (dose
- related).
- Nausea
- diarrhoea
- or constipation.
- Headache.
- Elevated liver enzymes (usually asymptomatic).
- Rhabdomyolysis (rare but serious).
- Increased blood glucose or new
- onset diabetes (rare).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
- Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Report any unexplained muscle pain
- tenderness
- or weakness immediately (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis).
- Interactions with certain antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin)
- antifungals
- and some cardiac medications — consult a physician.
- Regular liver function tests recommended.
- Use with caution in patients with heavy alcohol use.
