Indication
Gliclazide modified-release is an oral sulphonylurea antidiabetic agent used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
Ingredients
- Gliclazide 30 mg (modified release)
Direction
Adults: 30–120 mg once daily taken with breakfast. Start at 30 mg and titrate upward based on blood glucose response. Maximum dose is 120 mg per day. Swallow whole; do not crush or chew.
Side effects
- Hypoglycaemia (most important adverse effect).
- Nausea
- diarrhoea
- or abdominal discomfort.
- Skin rash or pruritus (rare).
- Elevated liver enzymes (rare).
Precautions
- Do not use in type 1 diabetes
- diabetic ketoacidosis
- or severe renal/hepatic failure.
- Risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
- especially if meals are missed or with excess alcohol.
- Use with caution in elderly patients
- who are more susceptible to hypoglycaemia.
- Interactions with fluconazole
- NSAIDs
- and beta
- blockers may enhance hypoglycaemic effect.
- Monitor blood glucose regularly.
- Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
