Indication
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, skin infections, and sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia.
Ingredients
- Azithromycin 250 mg
Direction
Adults: For most infections, 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2β5 (Z-pack). For chlamydia, a single 1 g dose. Take with or without food. Children: dose based on body weight (10 mg/kg on day 1, then 5 mg/kg on days 2β5).
Side effects
- Nausea
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain
- or vomiting.
- Headache.
- QT interval prolongation (rarely leading to arrhythmias).
- Hepatotoxicity (rare).
- Skin rash or allergic reactions (rare).
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
- Use with caution in patients with liver disease or cardiac arrhythmias (QT prolongation risk).
- Interactions with antacids (space 2 hours apart)
- warfarin
- and ergot alkaloids.
- Complete the full prescribed course.
- Overuse or inappropriate use can lead to antibiotic resistance.
