Indication

Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Ingredients

• Levofloxacin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg once daily (or 750 mg once daily for complicated infections) as directed by a physician. Duration typically 5–14 days. Take with plenty of water. Avoid antacids, iron, or zinc supplements within 2 hours of dosing.

Side effects

• Nausea
• diarrhoea
• or abdominal discomfort.
• Headache or dizziness.
• Insomnia.
• Photosensitivity.
• Tendinitis or tendon rupture (rare).
• CNS effects: agitation
• confusion
• or seizures (rare).

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
• Avoid in children and adolescents under 18 years (risk of joint/cartilage damage).
• Risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture
• especially in the elderly and those on corticosteroids.
• Avoid excessive sunlight
• use sun protection (photosensitivity).
• May prolong QT interval
• avoid in patients with known QT prolongation or those on QT
• prolonging drugs.
• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or CNS disorders.
• Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
