COTRIM 800mg + 160mg + 960mg

Indication

Co-trimoxazole (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim) is an antibiotic combination used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (including Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia), otitis media, traveller's diarrhoea, and some other bacterial infections.

Ingredients

• Sulfamethoxazole 800 mg
• Trimethoprim 160 mg

Direction

Adults: 960 mg (1 tablet of 800/160 mg) twice daily for most infections. For Pneumocystis pneumonia: higher doses as directed. Duration typically 5–14 days depending on infection. Take with plenty of water.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• or anorexia.
• Skin rash (including rare severe reactions: Stevens
• Johnson syndrome
• toxic epidermal necrolysis).
• Photosensitivity.
• Bone marrow suppression (with prolonged use): thrombocytopenia
• leukopenia.
• Hyperkalaemia (especially in high doses or renal impairment).

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to sulfonamides or trimethoprim.
• Contraindicated in severe renal or hepatic impairment
• megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency.
• Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy and during breastfeeding of newborns.
• May cause photosensitivity
• avoid excessive sun exposure.
• Maintain adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria.
• Interactions with warfarin
• phenytoin
• and methotrexate.
• Monitor blood counts with prolonged use.
