Amoxicillin (CREACIL) 500mg

Indication

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (otitis media, sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin infections, and dental infections.

Ingredients

• Amoxicillin trihydrate 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg three times daily (every 8 hours), or 500–875 mg twice daily, depending on severity. Children: dose adjusted by weight (25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses). Complete the full prescribed course.

Side effects

• Diarrhoea
• nausea
• or vomiting.
• Skin rash or urticaria (may indicate allergy).
• Pseudomembranous colitis (Clostridium difficile) — rare but serious.
• Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis (rare).

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to amoxicillin
• penicillins
• or cephalosporins.
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
• dose reduction may be required.
• May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives (use additional contraception).
• Prolonged use can cause overgrowth of resistant organisms
• monitor for superinfection.
• Interactions with anticoagulants (warfarin)
• monitor INR.
