Bactrim comprime Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim

Indication

Bactrim (co-trimoxazole) is an antibiotic combination used to treat urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, shigellosis, pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), traveller's diarrhoea, and certain respiratory infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients

• Sulfamethoxazole 400 mg
• Trimethoprim 80 mg

Direction

Adults: 2 standard tablets (or 1 double-strength tablet) twice daily for 5–14 days depending on the condition. Take with plenty of water. Follow the prescriber's instructions.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• anorexia — common.
• Skin rash
• photosensitivity — common.
• Stevens
• Johnson syndrome — rare but serious.
• Bone marrow suppression (thrombocytopenia
• leukopenia) — uncommon.
• Elevated creatinine — monitor renal function.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with severe sulfonamide hypersensitivity.
• Contraindicated in severe hepatic or renal impairment.
• Avoid in the first trimester and near term of pregnancy.
• May interact with warfarin
• methotrexate
• and phenytoin — monitor closely.
• Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
• Keep out of reach of children.
