Nandiazine Sulfadiazine 500mg

Indication

Nandiazine (Sulfadiazine) is a sulphonamide antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections, toxoplasmosis (in combination with pyrimethamine), and certain other bacterial infections susceptible to sulphonamides.

Ingredients

• Sulfadiazine 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 1–2 g loading dose, then 1 g every 4–6 hours (total 4–8 g per day), or as directed by a physician. Children: doses based on body weight. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent crystalluria.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• or anorexia.
• Crystalluria or kidney stones.
• Skin rash
• Stevens
• Johnson syndrome (rare but serious).
• Photosensitivity.
• Blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis
• thrombocytopenia) — rare.
• Elevated liver enzymes.

Precautions

• Maintain high fluid intake (at least 1.5–2 litres per day) to prevent crystalluria and kidney stones.
• Contraindicated in sulphonamide hypersensitivity
• severe hepatic or renal failure
• blood dyscrasias.
• Avoid in neonates and infants under 2 months (risk of kernicterus).
• May cause photosensitivity — use sun protection.
• Monitor blood counts and liver/kidney function during prolonged use.
• Keep out of reach of children.
