Indication
Folic acid 5 mg is used for the prevention and treatment of folate deficiency and megaloblastic anaemia. It is also used before and during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus, and in patients with haemolytic anaemia or those on antifolate drugs (e.g., methotrexate).
Ingredients
- Folic acid 5 mg
Direction
Adults: For folate deficiency and megaloblastic anaemia — take 5 mg once daily for 4 months. For prevention of neural tube defects — take 5 mg once daily from at least 4 weeks before conception and continue for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (high-risk groups; standard prevention uses 400 mcg). Children and other indications: as directed by physician.
Side effects
- Rarely: allergic reactions including skin rash
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (mild
- at high doses)
Precautions
- Do not use for pernicious anaemia without also treating vitamin B12 deficiency — folic acid can mask B12 deficiency neurological damage.
- Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy — folic acid may reduce the efficacy of some anticonvulsants (phenytoin
- phenobarbitone).
- Use with caution in patients with malignant disease where folate
- dependent mechanisms are relevant.
- High
- dose supplementation should be used only under medical direction.
