Albendazole Albendazole 400mg

Indication

Albendazole 400 mg is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used to treat intestinal worm infections including roundworm (Ascaris), whipworm (Trichuris), hookworm (Ancylostoma, Necator), pinworm (Enterobius), and tapeworm infections. It is also used in the treatment of tissue helminthiases such as neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease.

Ingredients

• Albendazole 400 mg

Direction

Adults and children over 2 years: For intestinal helminths — single dose of 400 mg orally, with or without food. For neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease — 400 mg twice daily for 28 days with meals, repeated as directed by a physician. Children under 2 years: 200 mg as a single dose.

Side effects

• Abdominal pain

• vomiting
• Headache
• dizziness
• Elevated liver transaminases
• Reversible alopecia (with prolonged use)
• Allergic reactions (rare)

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients allergic to albendazole or benzimidazoles.
• Contraindicated in pregnancy — teratogenic in animal studies
• use effective contraception and avoid use in first trimester.
• Liver function tests and complete blood counts should be monitored during prolonged treatment.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
• May cause elevated liver enzymes — discontinue if significant hepatotoxicity occurs.
• Keep out of reach of children.
