Indication

Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone infections, and otitis media caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients

• Cephalexin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg every 12 hours for uncomplicated infections. More severe infections: up to 1–1.5 g every 6–8 hours. Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6–12 hours. Take with or without food; taking with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset. Complete the full course of treatment.

Side effects

• Gastrointestinal: nausea
• diarrhea
• vomiting
• abdominal pain.
• Hypersensitivity reactions: rash
• urticaria
• anaphylaxis (rare).
• Superinfection (candidiasis) with prolonged use.
• Rarely: hepatitis
• nephrotoxicity.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
• Use with caution in penicillin
• allergic patients (cross
• reactivity is possible
• though uncommon).
• Use with caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment required).
• Prolonged use may cause superinfection including Clostridioides difficile
• associated diarrhea.
• Keep out of reach of children.
