Bactrim Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim 400mg/80mg

Indication

Bactrim is a sulfonamide-trimethoprim combination antibiotic used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, bronchitis, shigellosis, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (treatment and prophylaxis), and traveller's diarrhoea caused by susceptible organisms.

Ingredients

• Sulfamethoxazole 400 mg
• Trimethoprim 80 mg

Direction

Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet (400 mg/80 mg) every 12 hours for routine infections, or as prescribed. Severe infections may require higher doses. Children: dosage adjusted by weight as directed by a physician. Take with or after food and with adequate fluid intake. Complete the full prescribed course.

Side effects

• Gastrointestinal: nausea
• vomiting
• anorexia
• diarrhea.
• Skin reactions: rash
• urticaria
• rarely severe reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome
• toxic epidermal necrolysis).
• Haematological: thrombocytopenia
• leucopenia
• megaloblastic anaemia.
• Renal: crystalluria
• deterioration of renal function (rare).
• Photosensitivity.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with documented hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim.
• Contraindicated in severe renal or hepatic impairment.
• Contraindicated in infants under 2 months of age (risk of kernicterus).
• Contraindicated in patients with megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency.
• Avoid in late pregnancy (risk to fetus).
• Monitor blood counts with prolonged use (risk of haematological adverse effects).
• Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
• Keep out of reach of children.
